I realized there is nothing more astonishing than a human face.
You feel your obligation to a child when you have seen it and held it.
Any human face is a claim on you,
because you can’t help but understand the singularity of it,
the courage and loneliness of it.

But this is truest of the face of an infant.

I consider that to be one kind of vision, as mystical as any.

Gilead, p. 66

  1. "...there is nothing more astonishing than a human face

Sometimes I find myself just staring into my baby's eyes (she's almost four months old now), unable to look away. I am awestruck that this is a little person staring back into my eyes, a separate baptized soul with a whole life of her own in Christ. She is beholding me in wonder as well. What a blessing that I am privileged to know her, to love her, to teach her, to care for her, to know her for eternity. And that goes for each of my children.

Yes, the eyes are the light of the body, so faces are astonishing.
